A few days ago, HandyGames’ mobile version of Bugbear’s demolition derby-style racer Wreckfest ($9.99) was updated with massive graphics improvements on mobile. These include higher quality textures, trees, foliage on race tracks, an effects quality setting, 360 degree view with touch controls, and a lot more. When SNK was looking to launch its new arcade/console platform, it had one fairly big problem on its hands: a lack of recognizable IPs. The Ikari series had largely burned all of its fuel and its creator had left the company, wanting nothing to do with the standardization that came with the NEOGEO. Athena had largely only been popular for her cheesecake posters and box covers, with the game itself not being very well-regarded. As such, the NEOGEO launch line-up had surprisingly few familiar faces in it. But there was one success that SNK could try to follow up on, and that was its popular NES baseball game, Baseball Stars . It should have been a home run, but Baseball Stars Professional ($3.99) ended up getting tagged at first base. What went wrong? Well, a lot of things. Each and every day new mobile games are hitting the App Store, and so each week we put together a big old list of all the best new releases of the past seven days. Back in the day the App Store would showcase the same games for a week, and then refresh those features each Thursday. Because of that developers got into the habit of releasing their games throughout Wednesday or very early Thursday in order to hopefully get one of those coveted features spots. When Terra Nil (Free) from Devolver Digital and Free Lives was revealed, the striking aesthetic and premise had my attention. Devolver is known to publish interesting games, even if I don’t enjoy every release from them, but Terra Nil looked like it could be special. Having now played it across iPhone 11, iPhone 14 Plus, iPad Pro (2020) and on PC (laptop and Steam Deck) for this Terra Nil review, it has been interesting and somewhat disappointing seeing how it scales across hardware. Terra Nil is a very zen-like experience, but one that can get frustrating. Your aim is purifying the soil, creating forests, flowers, and basically creating the best wilderness you can as you balance your resources. There’s a blend of strategy games and puzzlers in Terra Nil , and the difficulty options allow tweaking the experience to your liking almost. Following the December version 5.2 update, developer Hidden Variable pushed out a major update for Skullgirls Mobile (Free) a few hours ago. Skullgirls Mobile 5.3 brings in Black Dahlia’s full release, XP boosts, fighter tuning, free gifts, and a lot more. Since launch, Skullgirls Mobile has gotten a ton of support, and it is an absolute essential on any platform if you enjoy fighting games. I included it in our best fighting games to play on Steam Deck feature and continue to enjoy it on Steam Deck regularly. It is also now easier to trigger a Boost and standard relics now include both Black Dahlia and Umbrella Death Wish.
