TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Donut County’

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado…

Donut County

Ben Esposito’s Donut County ($4.99) has been in the works for literally years, since at least as far back as 2012 when it was a quirky prototype known as Kachina. The idea was novel and pretty simple: You controlled a hole which you could move around and swallow up objects, and the more objects you swallowed the larger your whole would grow, thus allowing you to swallow up larger and larger objects. Like a bizarro Katamari Damacy. Now in 2018 this wacky idea has finally been realized on iOS, desktop, and PS4, and accompanying this odd concept is an intriguing story and colorful cast of characters telling the tale of Donut County and its inhabitants.

There’s not much to add about the game that hasn’t been covered in our 5 star review, and indeed it’s not easy to talk about Donut County without spoiling the fun of discovering things on your own. Your best bet is to simply plop down your five bucks and enjoy every bit of the game fresh. While Voodoo might have beaten Esposito to the punch by copying the swallowing hole mechanic in their mega-popular Hole.io, it doesn’t have the heart or personality of Donut County, and this release continues the trend of publishing partner Annapurna Interactive putting out some of the highest quality premium games on mobile. Don’t be afraid to let yourself get swallowed up by this absolute gem.
