SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Kirby and the Forgotten Land’, ‘Devastator’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 25th, 2022. Today sees the release of the latest big release from Nintendo, Kirby and the Forgotten Land. But there are several other games besides that worth taking a look at, and a few more besides. We’ve got summaries of everything, as usual. Plus a whole bunch of new sales, and a list of discounts expiring over the weekend. Let’s get to work!

New Releases

Kirby and the Forgotten Land ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Kirby heads to full 3D for the first time in this wild adventure. Play as Kirby, the best little guy in the world of Nintendo, as he tries to rescue his friends in a mysterious new world. All the usual Kirby gameplay is here, with the added ability to partially swallow larger objects and use them for nefarious purposes. Rebuild the Waddle-Dee village and enjoy some minigames between stages. I might be reviewing this one, but there’s a demo if you don’t want to wait for my silly opinions.

Devastator ($6.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Oh hey, I know this one. This is a port of a mobile game made by the rather amazing Radiangames, a developer that knows how to make a very fun twin-stick shooter. And lucky day, this is a twin-stick shooter. Vector-based visuals, multiple modes, tons of enemies, nifty power-ups, and some blazingly hot action make for an affordable slice of white-knuckle enjoyment.

BouncyBoi in Puzzle Land ($14.95)

This is a puzzle game where you have to guide the titular BouncyBoi through tile-based stages where your aim is to reach the goal. Sometimes that will be straightforward, but usually it won’t be. A well put-together puzzle game with a really charming presentation. The price might put some off, but it has a nice premium feel for those who enjoy this sort of thing.

Taqoban ($4.99)

Kind of a side-view take on Sokoban, similar to things like Catrap or Millie and Molly. Play as a little panda and push the designated blocks to the target spaces. The main unique gimmick is the ability to slide around sections of the level, a necessary feature for solving many of the puzzles. There are more than fifty stages in single-player, and you can also enjoy twelve levels designed for cooperative play in local multiplayer.

Ultreia ($12.99)

A point-and-click style adventure game about a little robot who has just lost his father and is on a journey to find some answers. Chief among them? Who killed your guardian and what you’re going to do about that. There are fifty locations to visit, a bunch of NPCs to meet and talk to, and plenty of puzzles to solve. Quite good as this sort of affair goes. Reviews on other platforms are quite favorable, so I’m not alone in that assessment.

Pixel Game Maker Series Steel Sword Story S ($9.99)

From the maker of 1001 Spikes comes this action-platformer created with the Pixel Game Maker MV software. Play as a swordsman who takes his iron blade into combat against the forces of evil to save his kingdom and the woman he loves. There are some light RPG elements in here to spice things up, but the game never quite shakes off its mid-tier action game vibes. Not horrible, but not really worth diving into unless you’re strongly drawn to its art style or something.

A Memoir Blue ($7.99)

Consider this a lightly interactive movie-length story. Dive into the mind of Miriam to explore her memories and the relationship between a superstar athlete and her mother. The story takes the form of a series of vignettes with some light gameplay. Lovely presentation and a solid story make this one to pick up for fans of narrative experiences.

Imp of the Sun ($19.99)

This is a Metroidvania-style game that feels like it’s taking a cue or two from the Ori series in particular. The game world is quite striking, apparently drawing from Peru. You’re a little imp named Nin, spawned from the final spark of the Sun. It’s up to you to restore the Sun by defeating the Four Keepers. It probably won’t convince you if you’re bored sick of this kind of game, but if you still have a spark of your own for non-linear platformers, you’ll want to consider grabbing this.

Funny Truck ($0.99)

That Disco Cannon Airlines thing from yesterday ended up being accompanied by another title from the same publisher, and it’s extremely similar. Drive your truck over ramps and trampolines, take to the air, and try to rack up points by messing things up. Of extremely dubious value, but at least it’s priced for the joke that it is.

Niko and the Cubic Curse ($4.99)

Well, this is from Pix Arts but I think it might not be a template flip. That’s rare. It is, however, a very generic platformer. The art looks weak, the collision seems poor, and it’s still somehow over a gigabyte in size. You get four worlds and some customizable hats, but I feel confident you can find better choices in this genre for a similar price.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Some neat sales today, depending on your tastes. Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World is a neat remake that is worth grabbing at the sub-twenty dollar level. Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection is having its first post-launch sale, and it’s not a bad one as these things go. There are lots of other goodies in there, so check the list carefully. The outbox is also worth checking. It’s a bit bigger than we typically see on the weekends, and there may be a few things in there that you want.
