SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Nintendo Switch Sports’, ‘Cardful Planning’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales
Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 29th, 2022. Even though we had a ton of releases yesterday, we somehow have a ton more today. The biggest of the bunch is Nintendo’s new Nintendo Switch Sports, but there are plenty of other games to fit a wide range of tastes. We’ve got summaries of all of them, of course. We also have the lists of new and expiring sales, and in the case of the former it is quite a large load. I had to heavily curate it or else I wouldn’t be going home tonight, friends. Let’s get to it!
New Releases
Nintendo Switch Sports ($39.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
It’s been a minute or two since Wii Sports rocked the gaming world with its simple, accessible motion control gameplay. Things have changed a lot since then, but I think we can all still have a bit of fun with motion controlled bowling. You get that here, along with five other sports. Soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton, and chambara are the sports this time around, with golf already announced to be added later this year. Attach those Joy-Con straps, find your TV’s warranty card, and get ready to party like it’s 2006. Play local multiplayer for up to four players, or hop online for some one-on-one. I may review this next week, but we’ll see.
Rogue Lords Day One Edition ($24.99)
Play as the devil and guide a team of evil-doers in this turn-based roguelite game. The main gimmick is that you can give up some of your life force to change the actual rules of the mechanics, plus the whole “monster team" angle. It’s decent as these things go, but some balancing issues keep it from being all that it could be.
Dandy & Randy DX ($6.99)
A top-down puzzle action game featuring a pair of troublesome archeologists, which means you can play solo or pull in a buddy for some local two-player co-op. Battle enemies, push boxes, find treasure, and sniff out some hidden levels. Make use of all of the tools at your disposal to clear the stages and get rich, or at least pay off your massive debts.
Pixel Game Maker Series Fish Tornado ($4.99)
Control a school of fish that is constantly increasing its numbers as you explore the various levels and battle your foes. Play it carefully because if you bite off more than you can chew you may end up being the one who is food. You can play local multiplayer against up to three other friends or family members, which seems like it would be a good time.
Our Ninja World ($12.72)
SAT-BOX has a formula by now, and this one follows it fairly tightly. It’s an assortment of ninja-themed minigames you can play alone or with some friends via local multiplayer. Fire shuriken at targets, dash across the top of the water, show off your grappling hook skills, and so on. There are ten minigames in all. If you like the theme, give it a go.
Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom ($14.99)
Artifex Mundi’s latest is about what you would expect. It’s a hidden object adventure with nice art, a decent enough story with lots of fantastical elements, and an alchemy system for a little extra spice. I’m not into these enough to tell you if this is a particularly good release, but I think fans of this publisher tend to enjoy most of the company’s work wherever they tend to fall on the scales.
Soft Drift ($3.85)
You have to drift you way through twenty-one minimalistic levels, collecting gas cans as you go so that you don’t run out of fuel. It reminds me a bit of Absolute Drift, but not as good. Quite cheap, though.
Cardful Planning ($4.99)
You play as a playing card in this action-puzzler. You have access to four different powers derived from each of the suits. Like, card suits. Diamonds, clubs, that kind of thing. You are not a card in a tuxedo or anything. Use the powers effectively to make your way around the obstacles and hazards safely in order to clear each of the more than one hundred stages on offer. A very good use of a fiver, provided you enjoy games of this genre.
Feral Flowers ($5.00)
This is a precision platformer that consists of ninety-two stages. This one distinguishes itself by the fact that you do not in fact have unlimited lives and can get sent back to the very first stage if you slip up too much. Apparently if you make enough progress there are ways to retrace your steps somewhat. That’s really all there is to it, but that should be plenty for platforming fans given the price.
West Water ($10.99)
It’s a survival game. Search for supplies, take care of your needs, and try not to die. As you power up your character, you’ll be able to explore more of the world, giving you access to cooler stuff to upgrade your character further. You know how this song and dance goes. The look of this one at least is a little unusual.
Landing Hero Haneda x 787 ($29.99)
What an oddly specific game this is. Reminds me of an old PC game in that regard. Anyway, you are a pilot of a 787 finishing up a long flight and need to land your plane at Haneda Airport in Japan. There are three different runways in this game, with one in particular being a bit of challenge even in real life. Variable weather and wind conditions are added in for some extra spice, and the game is set across a number of stages where you’re ranked based on how well you pull off your landing. It leans more towards the simulation end of things, but also has a bunch of assists to make it more doable for normal folks.
Ravenous Devils ($4.99)
Well, this is an odd one. You have to manage two businesses in this game: a tailor shop and a restaurant. What is the connection? Customers come to the tailor shop looking for new threads. You kill them, steal their existing clothes to make new ones, and dump the body into a trap door that leads to the kitchen of the restaurant. There, the corpses are cooked and turned into meals for unsuspecting customers. Make profits, upgrade your tools, improve the shops, and try not to get caught. Yeah, I don’t know. At least I can say I haven’t seen any other games on the eShop like this one.
Threaded ($9.99)
Pretty much a Pathpix-style puzzle game where you have to join two numbers together using the amount of squares expressed by the number. You get seventy-two puzzles in this one, and the whole thing is framed as being embroidery pixel art. There are also trivia questions, for whatever reason. That’s Ocean Media for you. Feels like there should be more puzzles for the price, but I suppose if you’re into this type of puzzle you’ll welcome having more to do.
Base Jump Wing Suit Flying ($9.99)
The last time we saw BoomBit, they had a game where you had to launch your car into an airplane. Now you’re stepping out of the car and doing some wing suit flying, but you’ll still sometimes be aiming for a plane. Not sure how it plays, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the premise. Lucky for me, and also perhaps for you, this game exists on mobile as a free-to-play endeavor. Give it a shot there and see if you like it enough to pay ten bucks for a less BS-ridden version.
Nonogram Minimal ($6.99)
Just what it says on the tin. You may know these puzzles as Picross or Pic-A-Pix or IllustLogic or any other name. Use the numbers as clues to tell you which squares to fill in. The completed puzzle will make a picture of some sort. You get two hundred puzzles here, ranging from tiny 5×5 puzzles to decent-sized 25×25 ones. If you somehow need more nonograms, that’s what this is.
Virtual Piano ($9.99)
Wow, another crappy virtual piano app. Possibly a template flip, but it’s from a new name: Peaksel. PeaksArt? Hmm. That’s probably a stretch. Handheld mode only. At least you get a full eighty-eight keys with this one. You have to scroll though, so don’t count on playing it like proper one. Ten delicious Snickers bars would be a far better use of money.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Yeah, so. In Japan right now it is the first day of Golden Week, which is a pretty big deal here. How that is relevant for us right here is in that many big sales happen during this week, in in recent years those have spilled over into digital game shops all over the world. To get to the point, there are tons of new sales today. So many that even my usual curation would have left too many. So I pulled out the chainsaw and really boiled it down. Somehow it’s still too many. Check those lists carefully, friends.
