Upcoming Mobile MMO RPG Shooter ‘Avatar: Reckoning’ Gets a New Trailer, Launching in 2023

This past January a contingent of developers made up of Archosaur Games, Tencent, Lightstorm Entertainment, and Disney announced a new mobile game set in James Cameron’s Avatar universe titled Avatar: Reckoning. With Avatar: The Way of Water, the long, LONG, more-than-a-decade-in-the-making sequel to the original 2009 Avatar film seemingly set to arrive in theaters sometime this year, as well as 3 more sequels planned by the end of the 2020s, it’s no surprise that there would be some sort of mobile game tie-in to stir up some hype with the fanbase. That this was described as an “MMO RPG Shooter" though made it feel like maybe there were bigger plans for Avatar: Reckoning than your average licensed idle game or hero collector. Well this week the first trailer for Avatar: Reckoning has been released, and while it doesn’t show off a ton, it definitely looks impressive so far.

This is billed as a teaser trailer, and while plenty of it is obviously pre-rendered cutscenes, it looks like portions of it are generated in-engine, and it’s looking pretty darn good. This is being made in Unreal Engine 4 so that would explain a lot of the dramatic lighting and visuals on display. Still, I’m waiting to see some actual real-deal gameplay of Avatar: Reckoning to know more of what it’s all about, and since it was originally planned to launch in 2022 but is now slated for 2023 it might be a while before we get something like that. If you’re a big Avatar fan however this is one you’ll want to keep an eye on in the coming months.
